Pitti Palace

Luca Pitti, who commissioned the construction of the building in 1458, wanted his residence to be the most majestic of the city. He bought all the properties between his new residence and the top of the hill to build the Boboli garden. A century later, Eleonora da Toledo, the wife of Cosimo I de’ Medici, bought the palace and since that time the building was refurbished and enlarged to become as it is today. With the end of the Medici family, the duchy and the palace, became the property of the Lorena family and in the 19th century it was the residence of Napoleon during the period of his dominion of Italy. Further on, in 1860 the palace became property of the Savoia family, when Tuscany was one of the provinces of the kingdom of Italy. King Vittorio Emenuele II used the Pitti Palace as his residence in the time when Florence was the capital of Italy. Later on, in 1919, his nephew Vittorio Emenuele III gave the palace to the Italian state government and from that time, the Pitti Palace became the headquarters of important museums. Pitti Palace holds today several principal galleries and museums: the Palatine Gallery and the Royal Apartments, the Gallery of Modern Arts, the Costume Gallery, the Silver Museum, the Porcelain Museum and the Boboli garden (a real open-air museum). The pedestrian area begins from the Pitti square. Pitti Palace is easily reachable from the hotel in 10/15 minutes walk.
